Hon Lam, Illustrator & T-shirt Designer

He describes himself as a 'prolific design machine'. This internationally recognised t-shirt designer doesn't say much but his award-winning t-shirt designs express witty humour that take a jab at pop culture. This video is part of the Martell Rising Personalities Awards '09

The concept for Hon Lam's video is the 'split-screen' look, also known as 'picture-in-picture'. This technique holds the viewer's attention to the screen as the experience becomes more immersive. Colour grading has emphasis on bringing out the skin tone while increasing the contrast between the subject and the backgdound. Hon Lam has chosen the theme song of the japanese anime series, Naruto.

Hon Lam's bio:
The works of Hon Lam aka Flying Mouse are consistently blessed with great ideas that dance flamboyantly between hilarious criticism of pop culture and elegant surrealism.

Getting a commission to design a T-shirt for Threadless, a popular US based online store, is something designers shout about. Hon Lam has 20 designs published by Threadless and won three prizes at Threadless' annual Bestee Awards for Most Printed Designer 2007, Newcomer of the Year 2007 and also for Best Concept For A Design 2007.

Currently, Hon Lam is committed to a personal project called FM365, which requires him to produce one design a day for a year, with hopes that each design will eventually be turned into a T-shirt. Hon Lam has also launched his online store to get the Flying Mouse name out there as a reputable brand and designer.

Sze Yoong, Jewelry Designer

She's charming, intelligent and videogenic- a classic combination of beauty and brains. Sze Yoong is the owner of Sze Accessories, the popular online store that makes fashion forward handcrafted jewelries. This video is part of the Martell Rising Personalities Awards '09.

Sze's biography video has the look of an elegant art piece- contemporary and warm. It gives the feeling of a designer admiring her work in a cosy workshop. Some scenes transition from one to another via an out of focus crystal goblet. Colours of Sze have an imperial topaz shade but her masterpieces exude a sapphire hue of sophistication. Videography of her jewelry are given extra care due to their small size. In the video is a Motion Graphics work showcasing her jewelry pieces.

Tan Sze Yoong's bio:
Born out of her love for handmade accessories, Tan Sze Yoong started Sze Accessories in 2007 after years of making her own jewellery. All her designs are handcrafted with no two pieces being identical. She focuses much of her attention in creating jewellery that allows women to be fashion forward while still remaining timeless and elegant in shaping their fashion identity.

The diversity and different varieties of her jewellery are expressions of her fixation towards culture, nature and designs gained from excursions around the world. Combined with her love for patterns, ornamental craft and art, the perfectionism results make Szes pieces a rare masterpiece to own and treasure.

Chin Yew, Artist

Eccentric, egoistic and emotional, the 3 words Chin Yew uses to describe himself, which I agree is the trademark of most great artists. Watch this video of the co-founder of the 30 Day Artist movement. This video is part of the Martell Rising Personalities Awards '09.

This video tries to emulate the raw, 'grungy' feel of old 16mm film- sprinkled with film grain and a bleached look mingling with over saturated footage. Video pacing is leisurely, complementing one of Chin Yew's favourite song, 'The Rainbow Connection by Sarah McLachlan'.

Chin Yew's official bio:
Fresh out of school, Chin Yew slogged the 9-5 work day feeling like he was missing something from his life. Taking a risk, he quit his job, rented a room for a month, locked himself in and proceeded to paint 40 pieces, documenting his efforts in his blog www.30dayartist.com that later turned into an exhibition at Seni Gallery entitled The Boy Who Loved Clouds and a picture book of the same name.

30 Day Artist is now a global effort, where a new artist takes upon the challenge once faced by Chin Yew. Chin Yew has also published a two volume graphic novel called I See So Many Butterflies and today participates in TV production jobs like writing, editing and directing.

Baron on the set of Martell RPA. Jade (PR) conducts interviews while William (client) listens on

We’re due to roll out biography videos for each finalist of the Martell Rising Personalities Awards ’09. It has been an eventful month for us as we compiled and animated material for  all 10 videos featuring some of the most promising individuals in the country.

Already into its 3rd year, the awards honour up-and-coming individuals from various industries who rise above the competition to reach greater heights.

Baron, Pureen, RPA finalist Sze of Sze Accessories, Jade (PR) and Angie (client)

This will also be WolFang Digital's 3rd batch of Biography Videos for the awards and we're just loving it. We have glimpsed into the lives of each finalist and we are inspired by them. This round of videos are more polished and elegant as greater care was placed in the videography and video editing stages.

Our client Angie explores the feeling of becoming a videographer.

Thanks to the new Edius 5 video editing system, we have a whole new set of tools to work with. Extensive use of Colour Grading (colour augmentation used by video editors to evoke certain moods) gave each video its own distinct style. The story and flow of each video is also smoother and feels more like a 'National Geographic'' production.

In terms of music, we got the finalists to suggest their favourite song. Alternatively, we came up with appropriate upbeat contemporary vocals in contrast to the instrumental tracks of previous years.

We had a fun time doing the video interviews in the photography studio, chatting over cups of coffee with our client, even discussing PS3 game strategies in between takes.

The location shoots were the usual eye-opener as we visited the finalists workplace and delved a little into their personal lives to discover what makes them tick. From national TV stations to cosy SOHOs, we are constantly reminded of two things: where passion abounds, your workplace is yours to decide and the more you do what you love, the better you will become at it.
