Digital Film Making Course: Making 2 Films Each Week

Since the launch of our Digital Film Making Course in June, we have already covered the Scriptwriting, Cinematography and Film/Video Editing modules. Our Digital Film Making Course has become more popular that I've decided to add camaraderie by integrating WolFang Digital's Digital Film Making course with my students in Saito Collge.

In college where I teach part-time, I have noticed some of my more hardworking students take a keen interest in film making. They are pursuing Videography and Digital Video Production and as they wish to learn more than what is offered by their syllabus, I have given them the opportunity to be part of the WolFang Digital's Digital Film Making course.

This is the focus of our Digital Film Making course: to give our students the best possible film making training so they can easily transition from a student into a professional film maker when they graduate.

These hand-picked students will be undertaking some of the tougher assignments meant for WolFang Digital's students. How are students chosen to join WolFang Digital's course? They are picked by both merit and passion. Students who participate actively in class, who ask intelligent questions, students who take the initiative to make their own films.

My students are split into 2 groups. To maximise the learning experience, students must rotate their roles for each film produced. So, a film director for one film may become a cinematographer for the next production. Each group has to produce a short film. They are given only 3 hours to shoot their film.

Once shooting is completed, every student must edit each others' film. Video Editing is done with Grass Valley's Edius. They then compare the different versions. Each editor has different interpretations of the original director's story. By watching these interpretations, their learning deepens as they understand how each person sees the same story.

Courtesy of WolFang Digital, students get the chance to use our professional equipment for their assignments. They have at their disposal, video cameras, HD DSLRs, high-quality tripods, lights, audio recorders, shotgun/boom microphones, clapperboard, reflectors and even dollies.

This means they can feel right at home when they find work after they graduate. This is the focus of our Digital Film Making course: to give our students the best possible film making training so they can easily transition from a student into a professional film maker when they graduate.

Two films were shot this week, the first was Kana's unrequited for love drama affectionately called 'Untitled' by is coursemates. The story tells the story of protagonist played by Ramavijay who confesses his love to Dhurga but is rejected. She claims here studies are her focus and love will have to wait, an accurate reflection of real life.

While Kana's story is a sit-down dialog driven piece, Ravi's film is a stark contrast by being an action film. Titled 'Stalkers', it tells the story of a cop looking for his suspect. The cop played by Dzul finds his man (played by S. Dinesh) in a busy library and a suspenseful fight scene ensues.

Both short films are different in terms of pacing and dialog. My students will get to understand how to edit two very diverse genres. This challenge will help sharpen their storytelling skills while rotating their roles from Film Director to Videographer and Video Editor ensures that their comfort zones are constantly changing. Keep them on their toes, keep them sharp.

University Malaysia- Teaching Film Making Up North
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan campus- impressive collection of 2 storey buildings stretching into the horizon
The state of Kelantan is located next to the Thai border and home to University Malaysia Kelantan. Its captital, Kota Bahru, was breached by the Japanese invaders on their way to Singapore, back in WWII. Compared to the national capital of Kuala Lumpur, traffic is smooth flowing even during peak hours. Motorists are tolerant and driving in Kelantan is a pleasant experience.

Our partner and authorised Apple reseller, SwiftTech Asia has set up a film making studio in University Malaysia Kelantan. Some of the equipment UMK purchased includes 2 units of JVC HM 100 full HD video cameras, FinalCut Express, a set of Film Gear professional video lights and Photoflex softbox sets. The most difficult to transport being the mammoth 52" JVC LCD.

Baron flew up north to train the lecturers and tutors on the principles of film making which covered cinematography, film editing and chroma key lighting/removal. The faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage were attentive and asked challenging questions most notably regarding green screen lighting and removal techniques.

Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).
The lights from Film Gear were excellent. When paired with the Photoflex softbox lights, they formed a great team and Baron was able to 'highlight' the effect of each light in the 3 point lighting system. The HM 100 video cameras also performed superbly, enabling the capture of the elusive rim lighting. After the staff completed a short videography exercise, footage fromt he HM 100 were brought into Final Cut Express and the green screen was successfully removed. Fine synergy between the lighting, cinematography and editing equipment.

Some of our students were police officers. We had a constable, a corporal and a lady sergeant attend our class. Apparently, they doubled up as instructors! Mr. Tarmizi, the acting head of department, listened in on Baron's lecture made various relevant and challenging questions. A former police officer, Mr. Tarmizi made it clear that, 'I want Baron to come talk to our students during our open day. We need professionals from the industry to talk to our students'. That was a good day!

The night was spent tasting the local Kelantanese dishes. Reputed to serve the best ayam percik , Yati Ayam Percik is a restaurant in the heart of Kota Bahru town. It is said to be the best restaurant for authentic malay (Kelantanese) dishes. There were a host of 'meaty' dishes- chicken, fish and beef. It seems vegetables don't feature much in their cooking. It's a wonder how so many Kelantan folks are slim!

Here, Friday is a public holiday and Sundays are like Mondays.Mr. Tarmizi said many who visited Kelantan fall in love with the state. It's easy to see why- the entire town including its outskirts are clean and the people are polite and helpful, always ready with a smile. Contrary to popular impression, Kelantan is actually a moderate islamic state and the various race get along just fine.
Mr. Tarmizi also iterated about the weather. Kelantan takes the brunt of our tropical weather. Come rainy season, the storms make sure it gets flooded all the time. How are they affected by this? They love it, the state declares it a holiday and they all have fun in the ensuing flood!

We've been holding out for a long time, waiting for technology to become more advanced. We've also been waiting for just the right combination of equipment to make it to the shelves. We know now is the time to offer HD film making to you, because of the advent of the new DSLR cameras.
Today, we have in our hands the same equipment Lucasfilm and Robert Rodriquez are using for film making. The same kind of equipment used to make Hollywood blockbusters is now available to you: for your corporate films, documentaries, event videos and training videos.
