Once again it’s another new semester at Saito College and a new intake for WolFang Digital’s Digital Film Making Course. My new batch of students will want to save all their work in reliable, robust yet value for money hard disks.
My recommendation is the practical yet elegant looking My Passport range of hard disks from Western Digital. Yes, Western Digital also supply hard disks to Apple.
In our line of work shooting films almost everyday, we need a hard disk that’s fast enough to playback HD films, easy to carry around and one that won’t fail us… ever.
When it comes to reliability, one often go straight for the larger 3.5 inch that requires an Alternate Current power source. This is cumbersome as you’ll need another power point for it if you’re in the field and there’s more cables for people to trip over.
I prefer the 2.5 inch hard disks that take power from your laptop or PC. It’s smaller and although not as fast (7200 rpm for 3.5″ VS 54 rpm for 2.5″) the new MyPassport range come with USB 3.0 capability.
We use these hard disks very often, in the studio as well as on the field. Obviously we have a bunch of them and not one has failed us after years of daily usage. They playback HDSLR footage very well, even better if your PC or Mac is USB 3.0 compatible.
I suggest all my students get the Western Digital My Passport. They come in various sizes. Their largest being the 1TB My Passport Essential SE with transfer rates of up to 5Gb/s. This is my personal favourite!
